This song composed by OP Nayyar and sung by Mohammed Rafi with lyrics by Anjaan is one of my favorites. The song is from the movie “Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi” and filmed on Dharmendra, Tanuja and Mala Sinha. There is an interesting bit of trivia associated with this song as well as this movie. Ambarish Mishra, the compere of a show on Guru Dutt says that on the morning of 10 Oct 1964, OP Nayyar was stunned to hear from Abrar Alvi that Guru Dutt had died in the early hours of the day. When he entered Guru Dutt’s apartment on Pedder Road, he was struck by Guru Dutt’s peaceful countenance as his family grieved. A troubled soul, Guru Dutt looked peaceful in death. The song which OP Nayyar had just composed came to his mind “Aap ke haseen rukh pe aaj naya noor hai”. (There is a new light on your beautiful face today).
“Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi” lay unfinished until Dharmendra stepped in to finance the movie and play the role originally played by Guru Dutt. The scenes involving Guru Dutt were reshot. Incidentally, SD Burman had been selected as the original composer for the movie. When he suffered a heart attack and required a lengthy recovery, Guru Dutt replaced him with OP Nayyar. Apparently, SD had originally composed the tune for “Yeh dil na hota bechara” for “Baharen…” but it was reused by Dev Anand for Jewel Thief.
